Pf. - KIfpOSED STEAMER SERVICE. Ift * t'"" COLONIAL EXHIBITIONS. I — gO INTRODUCE CANADIAN GOODS. » TSB representative of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association in Auckland, Mr. T. fcft.Schry ver, has received some interesting V;information regarding the proposed new C direct. steamship service between Canada nftnd Australia and New Zoo land. S "It• will be remembered that while in tho Canadian delegates to tho - commercial congress recently held in Sydney took active steps to support tho runl'i ning of a. direct, steamer service- between 4 Canada and New Zealand, and cabled their 'fiapproval to the Canadian Government. The , delegates were in Auckland at the end »S *f October, and a (■, about the same time the ' Canadian Imperial Export Company, Limit- '■*. e( j ) 0 Ottawa, presented the following memorial to Sir Richard Cart wright, Minister for Trade and Commerce for Canada : —"That, the application for a subsidy from i, the Canadian Government to enable the $ Imperial Export Company to establish a direct. line of steamers between ports in ' Eastern Canada, Australia and New Zealand, was desirable for the following rea- , { cons —(1) The merchants throughout the "'.Empire will buy from Canada on equal terms; (2) Canada is the only competitor of the United States in American-made goods; (3) tho preferential tariff now existing in New Zealand and South Africa, and possibly in Australia at. an early date; and (4) it is - important to remember that Canadian f manufacturers are not compelled to go !■'; through the expensive exj>erienco of introducing their lines, and of undertaking a sisrica of educational experiments, which the United States manufacturers were compelled

to do in the beginning. The introductions hare all been made, and the Canadian manufacturer has only to show to buyers in Australia and New Zealand that he can. make the. same goods as are made by the Americans, in order to secure business. In other words, American goods are firmly established in Australia and Now Zealand, And Canada, making the same articles, with . quality and prices alike, should secure her | share of the trade, if the disadvantages ■ Bow existing can be done away with." Other advantages of a direct service have also been pointed out to the Canadian Minister by this company, who urged that, owing to heavy railway rates, and the fact that all the important manufacturing in- «! dustries are located in Eastern Canada, ■ for the great bulk of freight from Eastern Canada to Australia and New Zealand the Pacific route is impossible. The Imperial Export Company concluded -their memorial to the Minister by stating »tliai they are prepared to enter into an - arrangement with the Dominion Government, whereby they would furnish eight jUaiaers per year of suitable tonnage, running direct from Montreal or Quebec in >. Hummer, and St. Johns or Halifax in winter, to Australian and New Zealand ports. ;, They - would guarantee full cargoes, take „ entire charge of the freighting fend despatcning of the steamers, and undertake to establish permanent exhibitions in the prin- ■ cipal cities of Australia and New Zealand, where Canadian manufacturers generally may display their goods ■ for comparison • with those manufactured by tho United States. Competent officials would be "placed in charge at these exhibitions of "manufactured lines. For these undertakJ iivgfc company asked the Canadian Go- i ' vernraeiit for a subsidy of £62,500 per year for three : years, the company to supply each steamer with a minimum .cargo of . 6000 tons. ,
