FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKETS Business at the local fruit and produce markets during the week has been (airly brisk. Although the supply of old potatoes fell off, there was a very marked increase in the supplies of new locals, many lots being so small a* to be only salable at about cost of freight and bags, and further reducing the value generally of the better article. Onions were scarce and no local-grown have yet been Offered. Vegetables were in moderate supply, and such lines as green peas and French beans brought high values, other lines showing a drop in prices. In dairy produce there was a fall in auction supplies of farmers' butter, and eggs were shorter. The demand for butter was weaker, while eggs sold under keen bidding. Farmers' cheese was slow of sale. Poultry was in fair supply, but. as usual at this time of the season, the quality on the average was poor and the demand was again strong. For the wool sales, which closed yesterday, 102,000 bales were catalogued, and 45,000 sold for the Home market. 48,500 for the Continent, and 15,000 for the United States, 3000 hales ueing held over. There was a large attendance till closing, with a strong Yorkshire competition during the last few days. Compared with the September soles, all crossbreds advanced 5 per cent. , Greasy merinos were rather irregular. Beat wools lacked American support. Faulties were 7i per cent, down, but there was strong competition at this level. Good scoured merinos sold above September rates, and lambs' were 10 per cent, dearer.

Messrs. Dalgety and Co. have received advice from London as follow* The wool sales continue firm and active, with brisk competition. Compared with the closing rates of last sales, merino wools are par to 5 per cent, lower, except wools in heavy condition, which are fully 5 per cent lower. In crossbred wools of fine quality, greasy, a. change, if any, is in favour of sellers, and also for medium quality crossbred*. Slipes, coarse croesbreds, are 5 per cent, higher. Crossbred wools, scouted, are 5 per cent, higher. The; New, Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London office under date of December 2:— wool sales closed with good competition. A total of 97,000 bales in all have been sold, 'of which 48,000 bales were taken for the Continent and 4SGO bales for America. As compared with the closing rates at last sales prices ruled as under Lambs, medium and coarse greasy crossbred, scoured crossbred, and fine crossbred stipe, about 5 per cent, higher; coarse and medium crossbred slipe, about 5 per cent, to 7i per cent, higher: scoured merino super and fine greasy crossbred, about the same as last sales; merino, medium and inferior, about 5 per cent. lower; and greasy merino super, par to 5 per cent, lower.

WELLINGTON WOOL SALES. . ' COMPETITION BRISK. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Friday. The second of the 1903-10 series of Wellington wool sales, held to-day, was not only the most important December sale yet held, but was a very satisfactory clearance of the wools offered. Unlike the November sale, the American competition did not dominate the position, and for the very good reason that there was not the samo selection for the requirements of that trade. It was essentially , a Bradford tone day. Condition for condition, prices were quite equal to those ruling at Napier. As was anticipated, there was keen competition for the lower grade wools, and taking condition into account, these were dearer than at the November auctions. The best price of the sale was 13jd for light-condi-tioned half-bred, while a very light-conditioned Romney line went up to 13id, an advance of Jd on the beat price of the November sale. In one or two catalogues a good percentage of the lines were passed in, owing to growers* ideas of value being above the true market basis.

Some farmer* had not only made the common mistake of supposing that because a certain croasbred topped a previous market their* should about do the name, but had overlooked the fact that with the warmer weather the wool was much heavier in condition than in November. Generally the prices realised were moat satisfactory. Following ore the prices ruling last December, and in November and December of this year:—Best halfbred: December, 1908, 9id to 12d: November, 1909, —; December, 1909,12 d to 13|d. Medium halfbred. 7}d to BJd ; 12d to 13Jd; lid to 12d. Super, crossbred : old to IOJd ; Hid to 12Jd ; 12d to 13{d. Medium crossbred : 7d to 8i<l: Bid to 101 d; 9Jd to 10id. Coarse crossbred: 6Jd to 7Jd; 7d to 9Jd ; Brl to lOd; inferior crossbred : s]d to 6Jd; 6}d to 8d; 7d to Bid ; bellies and piece*: 3d to 7d; 4d to 7jd; sid to Bid. The actual prices realised cannot be accurately compared with those ruling at this time last year, without allowance being made for the remarkably light condition of this season's clip. LONDON.
