A ;'- NOTES BY PHAETON. Thb acceptances and general entries received last night in connection with tho Auckland Racing Club's forthcoming summer 'meeting, afford plenty of room for an | optimistic spirit to he entertained. The defection of Bobrikoff, Master Soult, Husbandman, and- Elysian from the Cup, it must be admitted, robs tho big event of some of slio flavour that would otherwise attach "to it; but with 21 horses still engaged ''there is abundant material to forecast a ' contest every way in keeping with the importance of the race. There are many pleasing features in connection with tho Cup acceptances: and none more so than to find All Red, who led tho field home last year, 'included in the number engaged. Mr. T. H. Lowry is the only owner with a double

string to his bow, the pair hailing from the Hawke's Bay stablo being Downfall and

Chwstl'tise. The Railway Handicap has an apcepvance of 19, and tho withdrawal of | Bobrikoff and Penates leaves Armlet at tho |.head of the list in the six-furlong race.

, ' 'It has been said, and probably not without ~; cause, that when an inquiry is made in reBiMdjto foul riding there is great difficulty i- to get riders to assume the candid attitude. This, ,1 have reason to believe from the best authority, was not the case when- the &stewards of tho Takapuna Jockey Club held •a inquiry unto incidents which occurred during the running of the Cheltenham Handicap, run on the opening day of their spiring meeting. The evidence, I am assured, was_ of a most conclusive character, and punishment has overtaken the jockey involved. Race-riding under any circumstances ■';. is fraught- with great danger, and where | there is any reason to believe that improper ■ tactics have been . pursued it behoves & stewards to adopt the firmest attitude.

In the early part of the present year Mr. J ( G. P. Donnelly withdrew his colours, and it * was currently reported that the popular scarlet and white stripes would not probably be men out again for a few seasons.. Word : comes, from Napier to tho effect that Mr. Donnelly has decided on again setting up ™' racing stable, and that he has appointed Mr. J. McLaughlin to act as private trainer. At the dispersal of the Wellington Park stud Mr. Donnelly bought tho Hotehkiss mare Formula for 1050 guinea*; but so far 11 the result has not been satisfactory from a , finanr . point; An opinion is ventured that Aiv 1 colt by Gold Keef from "Formula Mr. I Connelly will have a very promising young- ««• to carry his colours next season.

'tr 'i Cakobau's winning display in the | Maiden Hurdle Race on the opening day ■ of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Sprint? * Meeting encouraged Mr. R. W. Dudor to , give the Cuirassier gelding a further opportunity to dwtinftv.i-h himself over the wtens at the North Shore mooting, ' inanks £? the admirable handling of Arthur pJuJinn, Tu; Cakobau rolled into his second * !* ,lc with a fine dash of vim and ho won r ace , If i & mariner that must have been Bighly pleasing to his popular owner. With : the exception of one mild fault, Tui Cako- , Bans fencing was characterised by much • flash, and his effort at, the, concluding obstacle,.when the pace was right on, was all that could be desired. With a little more I Jeanoning Tui Cakobau may be expected to i ■» placed further on the way to take a , ' portion with noteworthy equinea engaged in ■ i;| uurdle racing.

Sir George Clifford has furnished the winner of the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feeding -two years in succession with a three-year-old son of Treadmill; and it is further interesting to note that Husbandman and Taskmaster, the two "- n s involved in the winning displays in connection with the. race referred to, each carried the same impost, (3st).

That. Lord Soult retains his pace to a marked degree he gave striking proof on TiK'ttdaj last, wkn ho won the Feilding Stakes. He was always in front, and the watch showed that he completed the five furlongs in the splendid time of lm. 1 l-ss.

Despite the stiff fees charged for the right, to bet, the poncillers continue to come along in strong force in Auckland for licenses. For the privilege of betting on the two days of the Takapnna Spring Meeting the knights of the l*x>k and pencil paid- no less a sum than £675.

From the manner in which Commander finished up his task in tho Tiri Hurdle Race on the opening day of the Takapuna meeting, there seemed to be strong evidence of improvement. The Officers son was one of the first horses beaten in the Hawaii Hurdle Haw on the second day.

The capital list of nominations received by the Thames Jockey Club in connection with their approaching summer meeting encourages the opinion that the forthcoming gathering at l'arawai will prove a record one under all headings. On Friday next Mr. K. Wynyard will declare the weights for tho first day's races.

F. Hill, who has been training at Filerslie for some time past, has received an appointment to train for a prominent supporter of racing in India, and during the coming week he leaves for Sydney en route to his new sphere of duty in the East.

Lady Lucy (Bst 71h) was sent out. favourite for tho St. Andrew's Handicap, at Foilding. and her unplaced performance was dubbed as the disappointment of the race.

The Whangarei Racing Club have decided on giving £430 in prize money at their annual race meeting, which is fixed to be held on January 7 and 8.

The withdrawal of Master Soult from the Auckland Cup may, I suppose, bo taken to mean that the son of Soult will lie an absentee from the A.R.C. Summer Meeting.

The Wellington Racing Club havo decided on their summer programme, which dhows prize money to the extent of £6660. Tho Wellington Cup is worth £1000.

The Otamatea Racing Club intend holding their annual race meeting on January 14.

The Waipa Racing Club hold their annual race meeting to-day.

Diabolo continues to harden for the Auckland Cup.

Taskmaster, the winner of the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding, is another illustration of happy results attending tho mating of the Musket and St. Simon families, and that, too, when the lines in the pedigree take shape as inbreeding. For instance, Catherine Wheel, the dam of Treadmill (sire of Taskmaster), was got by Maxim, son of Musket, while his dam (Madowla) was got by Trenton, who is also a son of tho groat Toxopholite horse. Then, again, hill of Portland, the sire of Treadmill, was got by St. Simon, whilo the hitter's sire, Galopin, is responsible for Oalliard, sire of Madowla'.s dam, Azalea. The following are. the leading lines in the pedigree of this promts ing three-year-old: TASKMASTER. Sir: Treadmill, by Bill of Portland (son of St. Simon) from Catherine Wheel, by Maxim (ion of Musket), from Miss Kate, by Adventurer. Dam • Madowla, by Trenton (son of Musket) from Azalea, by Galliard (son of Galopin), from Lilian, by* Wingrave.

•During the Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting 16 races were brought up for decision, and as descendants of 11 different sires secured a place on the winning list it may bo. inferred that there was a wide distribution. The. defunct Cuirassier was placed at the head of the list by reason of a double win on the part of Tiii Cakobau and a single for which Jena was responsible. Soult claimed two winners in the shape of Maheno and Lady Waterford ; Seaton Delaval had a brace of winners in the shape of Royal Scotland and Elegance, while Birkenhead cjaimed a double winner in Mistime. The other sires represented on the winning list were: Explosion, Merriwee, Flintlock, Menschikoff, Takapuna, Leolantis, and St. Clements, each of which claimed one winner. T)' E KAPUN A MEETING. ALLEGED FOUL RIDING. A lengthy inquiry by the committee of the Takapuna Jockey Club was held yesterday, with reference to a charge made by Claude Brown, the rider of Sir Artcgal, against B. Deeley, the rider of Tarina. in the Cheltenham Handicap, run at tlio club's spring meeting last Saturday, for deliberate interference, by which Brown's foot was severely injured. Lengthy evidence was taken, each rider in the race being examined, as also several owners and trainers. After careful consideration, the committee unanimously resolved to disqualify B. Deeley for 12 months for foul riding in the Cheltenham Handicap.
