— The Rev. Thornton was a passenger from the South by the Rarawa yesterday.
The Rev. Canon Haselden was the recipient of a purse of sovereigns at St. Peter's Parish Hall ; Onehunga, on Thursday evening.
The Legislative Council yesterday granted leave of absence for the remainder of the session to Hon. J. Holmes on account of ill-health.
It is reported (srys a Waikato paper) that ex-Judge Button, of Auckland, intends to commence to practice in Cambridge from the beginning of the New Y"car.
Mr. F. B. Barnes, who has been in the employ of the Union 3.5. Company for the past 25 years as delivery clerk, was presented at" Auckland during the week with a ease of pipes and a purse of sovereigns on the occasion of his retirement from the company. The presentation was made by Mr. T.'K. Sinel on behalf of Mr. Barnes' 'hipping and commercial friends.
