SPORTING.

'W0'?~-V • ♦■ 'i.;iu : .i.'U ■„■. • ' 'OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB'S % £ SPRING MEETING. .;'_■ . SECOND DAY. ,'. J>ffllFECT weather and another large attendance ''' last Saturday assisted the Otahuhu Trotting Club ' ' In bringing to a conclusion what has proved to be the club's most successful spring meeting on record. The course was in good order, the fields terce. and tho racing, notwithstanding a couple of runaway victories, was of the interesting order. Jlr. Fred. D. Yonge managed the gathering splendidly, while the other officials capably carried out their duties. The stewards met once during the afternoon, , exception being taken to the running of Mabinga in the Flying Stakes (for ponies). Evidence was taken, when the now-stei'eotyped "caution" was "• administered. Why the stewards fail to take action over horses classed to trot certain times, and - i yet finish furlongs behind the winner, still puzzles the minds of sportsmen who follow trotting for - the pleasure they derive thereby. "'■-'.'. The bells were kept ringing merrily on the ma--chines, no less than £3587 being handled, an in'crease of £991' 10s over the corresponding day of ' last year, and making £6168 10s for the two days, ■ „;»s against £5322 10s in 1908, an increase of £8*46. ';' Eleven bookmakers paid £7 10s each, returning £82 10s in fees, or £165 for the meeting. :- The Innovation Trot was the opening event, and ■ - this went to the favourite (Wild Marie), who won - ' by 50yds from Norrington and seven others. . .-, ' Fioranz, la s o. and Gather No Moss were best .;*''backed in the order named for the Trotting Han- ■ dicap, which an outsider in Huanui won by a ',• neck from lago. with lioyal Albert third. Nora "' Soult was the only withdrawal from the Flying ■ \ Stakes, for which Mighty Atom was backed at odds on. A good race resulted in the favourite winning, all out, by a length from Carniania, with ■v. • Maika third. The time (585.) was much slower ; . than when Nora Soult registered her track record ' \ -of 55 4-ss. on the previous Wednesday. The Ota- : •Jjubu Spring trot saw another favourite triumph .- iwhen Albert H. won comfortably from a field of ,13, with Receiver second. Flora Mac cleared • V right away in the Panmure Trot, winning by a , ' 'good 200 yds from Albert Kdward and eight others, .' * ithe winner being best supported. The "Class Trot ■'saw Scotia defeat a field of six in good style, and ■ {making the fifth favourite to win out of six races .- ;i decided. Ten horses lined up for the Ladies' ':■.' -Bracelet, which went to a long-priced outsider in "Slack Diamond, with lago second, and the favour- ■; ite (Lady Park) third." The large field of 15 - started for the concluding race, the Telephone • ? Handicap, victory renting with Ballot, who beat ■'-. ; - ~ ■- one of the hottest favourites of the meeting in. - -• Eoyal Victor and returned a long price. '..'. A considerable amount of interesting and useful training work was got through at Ellerslie last Saturday. The work was all done on the sand unless where mentioned otherwise, while the horses were sent the reverse (left-handed) way round in view of the Takapuna. meeting, which opens next Saturday. Prophet and another St. Paul gelding covered seven furlongs in lm. 36 l-ss. Advocate, taking matters leisurely, swung round the track in 2m. 11 l-ss. This horse is very fit. Tarina sprinted five furlongs in- lm. 9 4-5sJ K. Heaton's Bother filly and a mate disposed of half-a-mile in 545., finishing together. Rimlock had much the best of Waiotahi at the end of six furlongs, run in lm. 23 4-ss. Prince Leo was in front of Michaeloff at the end of a mile, easing up, in lm. 50 4-ss. Aristocrat, who is likely to reward his owner shortly, did easy work. He is a ball of muscle. Grenadier covered two solid rounds at half-pace. Lady Wateiford skipped over four furlongs in 58 l-ss. Princess Sonlt covered a similar stretch in 545. Salute, on the inner grass track, dashed over two furlongs in 23 3-ss. Tamainupo was bustled over half-a-mile in 55 l-55., a task which Cunningham's Nereid filly improved on by 4 l-ss. Aristos and two comnanions finished together over four furlongs in 52 l-ss. Lloyd's beat Carnso over the same journey in 54 l-ss. Leo outpaced and out-jumped Urania in a turn over the obstacles, finishing strongly. Castle Blaney and Scotch ran three furlongs in 39 3-ss. Dogger Bank, with M. Ryan in the saddle, ran a circuit in lm. 58s. Excalibur was credited with 545. for half-a-mile.

Octoroon covered five furlongs in lm. 9s. Zinnia moved nicely in a spin round the inner grass track. St. Maria carried Landlock off his feet in a trial over the hurdles. . Landlock clouted the third fence, losing his rider (O'Brien), who escaped with a " winding." Cavaliero, who shows improvement, went twice round at halfpace, pulling up quite sound. First Barrel had all the best of Rua over the small sticks, covering a round in lm. 53 3-55., while Rua took: 3s. longer. Ngaouka, Turbine, Cymri, Scotty, Kakama, Madam Soult, Freevata, Regain, Hyperion. Wild West, and a number of others got through useful tasks. Bofh Salute and General Soult are going well. While being indulged with a run in a paddock on Saturday morning the two-year-old Ashby was startled (probably at a passing railway train), and in endeavouring to leap the stone wall out his forelegs severely.

During the running of the High-class Trot at the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting on October 27 (second day) certain seemingly suspicious practices attracted the attention of the stewards, who, after taking formal evidence, adjourned until last Friday, when the matter was gone into thoroughly. Another meeting will be held to-morrow, when a decision will be arrived at.

Tlie official list of weights for the Railway Handicap received at 'he A.B.C. office from Mr. Morse shows that Wild West's impost is 7st 41b, not 7st 61b, as telegraphed.

By the s.s. Waikare, which arrived yesterdav from the South, D. Morraghan returned with Master Soult, Elysian, First Gun, and Antoinette.
