COMMERCIAL.

Little business was transacted on the Stock Exchange on Saturday. In investment stocks only two sales wore made, viz., in Westport Coals at; £6 6s, and in Auckland Trams (preference) at 235. In mining lines Waihis dropped, a sale being recorded at £9 16s 6d. . More wero sought after at tho same figure, but further sellers held for £9 17s 6d. Grand Junctions also eased a little. As against 40s, tho closing sale on Friday, business? was done at 39s 6d and 395, tho market closing with buyers at 395, sellers at 39s 3d. Waihi Consolidateds realised 4s 3d, and Waihi Extenders . 4s" 2d. Talismans wore quoted with buyers at 503, sellers at 50s 6d. Slight fluctuations wero recorded in soveral other stocks.

LAND SALES. Messrs. T. Mandeno Jackson report the sale of another large block of land to Southern buyers. The Mataitai Block, of 7000 acres, at Southern Wairon, and about two miles from Cleveland, was sold by this firm on .Saturday, to Hawera buyers. The same firm also announces the sale of the Kaihu No. 2 Block, 3080 acres, near Dargaville. BUTTER AND EGGS. The wholesale quotations for butter and eggs for the week ending November 27 are as follows: Butter : Factory, Hid per lb; farmers', 6£d. Eggs, 9d per dozen. ■ > SALE AT WAIHOU. , The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company report :—At Wuihou we had an entry of 658 head of cattle, 101 pigs, and 287 sheep. Competition was brisk throughout, and, with the exception of a few ewes with lambs, everything was disposed of at auction. Fat sheep in wool made 16s; fat shorn ewes, 12s 6d and 12s 9d; weaner pigs, 9s to 12s 6d; slips, 15s; sows in pig, £1 17s 6d to £3 ss ; express, pair of horses, and harness, £48; choice fat heifers, £5 5s to £6; fat cows, £4 10s to £5 ss; aged fat cows, £3 15s to £4 10s; small fat steers, £6 4s to £7 2s; forward empty cows and heifers, £3 14s to £4 2s ; two-year steers, £3 lVs 6d to £4 3s; 18-month steers, £3 5s to £3 7s 6d ; 12 to 15-month steers, £2 10s to £3; mixed yearlings, £2 to £2 7s 6d; smaller sorts, 30s to 365 ; bulls, from 4 guineas to 8 guineas; choice dairy cows and heifers, £7 to £8 10s; others, £4 10» to £5 10s.

WORLD'S COTTON CONSUMPTION.

Our cables last week indicated a smart rise in cotton, due to shortness of production this year. According to the. statistics published by the International Federation of Master Cotton Spinners and Manufacturers' Associations for the' year ended August 31 last the world's consumption of cotton during the 12 months totalled 16,667,400 bales, as compared with 15,779,500 bales for the preceding year and 14,909,200 bales for 1906-7. Of this quantity 12,098.300 bales were American cotton, 2,479,3C0 bales East Indian, and 781,100 bales Egyptian, while 1,308,700 bales were derived from various sources. Great Britain consumed 3,153,500 bales during 1908-9, as against 3,394,400 bales in the preceding year; and Germany 1,748,500 bales, as against 1,759,600 bales; but Kussia consumed 1,337,600 bales, as compared with 923,100 bales. As regards stocks of cotton at August 30, according to the spinners' returns, there were 3,183,400 bales in hand throughout the world, as against 2,728,000 bales at the end of August last year .and 3,334.400 bales in 1907.
