OVERDOSE OF LAUDANUM.

- - Westport, Friday. At 10.30 a.m. to-day the chief steward- of the s.s. Whangape, Archibald .. McCallum, was found by an assistant, Joseph Cullen, in his bunk, in an unconscious state, with a bottle of spirits' of chloroform and laudanum on his table. Medical aid was summoned, and artificial respiration resorted to and emetics administered, but without avail. Deceased was a native of Glasgow, 45 years of age, and was married, with a home in Dunedin. " He left a letter, to the captain stating that he had been a fool to himself, and asking him to forward his effects to his wife at Dunedin.■. At the inquest in the evening, the evidence went to ishow that deceased had since the arrival of the steamer in Westport ">een drinking, and on one occasion had been admonished by the captain. The verdict of the Coroner was that death was due to an overdose of laudanum self-administered.
