NATIVE LAND COMMISSION.

PAYMENTS TO CHIEF JUSTICE.

During the discussion on the Estimates, to-night, Mr. Fisher moved that the item of £1695, House of Representatives, be reduced by £5 as an indication that constitutional principles should not bo violated as they were in connection with the payment to" the Chief Justice over and above his salary for services in revising the statutes. Mr. Baume said he did not approve of the appointment of a political chief to the bench. Appointments should be made automaticallv, according to seniority. The office of thief Justice should be open to any judge. Ho hoped the Government would introduce legislation preventing any extra payment being made to judges.over and above their salaries.

The Prime Minister remarked that the Chief Justice was appointed to the Native Land Commission because of hie position and knowledge of native legislation. The amendment was lost by 30 votes to 25.
