The usual quarterly competition for < Rogers' 'cup, by the members of the No. 1 Thames Rifles, took' place on Saturday. The weather was favourable,: and the scores " made above the average. The ranges fired at were 500 yds and 600 yds, 10 shots at - each. Captain Pearce proved the winner of the cup, and also of a special trophy presented by Mr. Dquslin, with a score of 86 .points, including a four-point handicap. The following are some of the principal scores :—Captain Pearae (handicap 4), 86;

At the Thames Police Court to-day an old man named John Bell was charged before Mr. Burgess, 5..M., that, being an inmate,of the Old Men's Home, he did on Sunday, 14th inst./ violently assault - another inmate, named William Bourke. Detective Cooney, on behalf of the police, asked for; a remand to. enable the injured man 'to* appear,- he* being at pre&mt in the hwpital suffering from the injuries received, which were stated to be of a serious nature, and might have been worse had not assistance been given him. f A remand was granted till the 23rd instant; * WAIHI, [nr TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] '. Waihi, Monday. On Saturday afternoon about 30 members of the two local volunteer companies fired for Mr. C. J. Saunders' champion belt, the ranges being 200 yds, 500yde, and 600 yds, seven shots at eafch distance. Lieutenant Clark, of the Waihi Rifles, who won the belt last year, was top scorer, with 86 points, and thus retains hie title as champion. Lieutenant Cornea and Private Deeming tied for second place. The anniversary services of the Waihi Methodist Sunday-school were held in the Academy Theatre yesterday, the Rev. H. Blamires, of Hamilton, preaching at all three services. / The singing of the children was a feature, and reflected most creditably on the conductor, Mr. R. Hawke. Mira M. Morgan was the organist, and solos were contributed by Mrs. Mac Williams and Mr. W. Powell. CAMBRIDGE. [FROM OCR OWN correspondent.] .. Cambridge, Monday. At St. Paul's Methodist Church on Sunday morning an impressive memorial service to the memory of the late Mr. Jos. Seth Gane, was conducted by the Rev. W. H. Beck. A large congregation was present. The late Mr. Gane was for many years a trustee and an active supporter of the church. The office-bearers of the church have placed a very handsome wreath on the grave of the deceased gentlemen., At Pukerimu Church on Sunday afternoon the Rev. W. J. Gow (Trinity Presbyterian) also made feeling reference to the life and character of the late Mr. Gane. - - - - • . - • Ensign and Mrs. Wilson, who have been in- charge of the Cambridge branch of the Salvation Army, have been transferred to Hawora. - - They will be succeeded by Captain and Mrs. Rimmer.
