CARRIAGE OF ISLAND FRUIT.
CHEAP RAILWAY RATES URGED.
BY TELEGRAPH.—. CORRESPONDENT.]
". \ • ' Wellington, Monday. . A - request has, been made to the ■ Minister ■ for Railways by Mr. A. E. Glover, M.P., that fruit from the -Cook Islands should be 'carried on the; railways at the same rate as that ruling for New Zealand-grown fruit. Mr. • Glover '[ has pointed out that as these islands are now a portion of the Dominion their fruit is entitled to the same concession as that accorded- to the 1 New Zealand fruit.' ."
< The reply of the Minister was that whilst he agreed with the reasonableness of the■ request, he foresaw the possibility of fruit from the other islands, being repacked on arrival at Auckland or Wellington in Cook Island cases, and thus forwarded by rail in order to obtain the. advantage/of the' concessions in freights. He . stated,, however, that he would, consider the matter.
