TARANAKI PETROLEUM.
A LKrrEB. has been addressed to members of Parliament by Messrs. G. Fox and A. E. Watkins, of New Plymouth, asking assistance in the matter of removing some of the obstacles in connection with the petroleum industry, such as duty on machinery, etc., used in.the recovery of petroleum, and securing certain exemptions, from, taxation of the capital which will be employed in developing the petroleum industry, ;; say, for 10 years, or for such other period as Parliament may •think fit. Capitalists have been making inquiries about the petroleum industry, says the letter, and apparently are' very satisfied with what they have heard. They will not, however, interest themselves, further because they are afraid of the severe taxation to which their capital might be subjected by the democratic form of government in the Do- ' minion. - - - ; ■
