THE TRUE NORTH.
Speculation* has been rife lately among Thorodon residents as to the moaning or object of a pyramidal structure on the Town Belt above the Wadestown Road (says the Post). It has been variously supposed to bo a defence landmark, part of the now water and drainage works, a signal station to Mars, a memorial to the late Premier, and a vantage point for the Government meteorologist to spy the weather afar off. All these tjuesses are incorrect. It is really an ob-servation-point put up by tho Survey Department, to indicate, tho true north from Mount Cook, tho oentro of surveying work in the Wellington district. There has been a mark on ,the spot for the last quartercentury or so, but hardly largo enough for observation purposes. The true south is marked by a similar erection at Island Bay.
