SPRING RACING CARNIVAL

AUCKLAND RACING . CLUB.

SECOND DAY'S RACING.

. Blue skies and bright sunny weather favoured the Auckland Racing Club yesterday, when; tho spring carnival was advanced another stage. The attendance for a spring gathering constituted a record. The grandstand onclosuro bore an attractivo appear-, ance, the lawn in particular presenting a most charming picture As usual, tho conduct of tho meeting by Mr. J. F. Hartland was excellent. Mr. R. B. Lusk efficiently filled the judge's box, whilo Mr. Chas. O'Connor was in his best form at tho barrier. Th© Auckland City Band, under Bandmaster John West, rendered a select programme, greatly enlivening the proceedings. : • » '■' ; . ..!-

During the afternoon tho stewards met-on several occasions. After the running of tho opening event, tho Spring Handicap, M. Ryan, rider of Tattoo, lodged a complaint against J. Fcrcival, rider of Carmania, for interference. After consideration the stewards hold that thero was somo interference, but it was accidental. Percival was warned to bo moro careful in the future. In the next event, tho Ponroso Hurdle Race, the top-weight, Shrapnel, finished last, whereupon the stewards reviewed his running. Tho trainer, T. [ Williams, and Robson, the rider, were questioned, and their explanations were' deemed Satisfactory. Tho top-weight in the Birthday Handicap, Ngapuka, also nnished last in his race, and M. Ryan, the rider, was reported by the club's look-out officer, Mr. Geo. Cutts, for not persevering with his mount. Mr. Cutts, F. McManemin (tho trainer), and Ryan were examined, the latter stating that his mount was interfered with at the soven-furlongpost. Whon the five-furlong post was reached, finding that he had no chanco of getting up, ho (Ryan) did , not unnecessarily persevoro with his mount. This explanation also was accepted as being satisfactory. Later on in tho day two tote bettors were arraigned and warned off.-

Mr. Harry H. Hayr and his staff had another busy day in the totalisator house, where £14,770 was handled, an increasp of £2536 10s over the corresponding day of last year, and making £25,173 10s for tho two days, an increase of £3534. Twentyfive bookmakers wore licensed at £20 10s each, as against 15 last year, making fees of £1025 for the two days from this source, as against £635 10s for tho same period in 1908.

THE KACING. The opening event of the programme was tho Spring Handicap, and in a field _of seven Wauchope was mado favourite. Waucbopo showed the way for about six furlongs, where Santa Rosa took command. Matters looked favourable for tho black son of Soult at tho distance, but ho had to succumb to a vigorous challenge on tho part of Maheno. who handled horself very attractively iu tho concluding stage. Eight horses were saddled up to contest tho Penrose Hurdlo Race, for which Reservoir was made favourite; but in a fast-run race ho had to strike his colours to Swagsman, who led all tho way homo from tho head of the straight. ';,' A strong field of 16 went to tho post for the Normanby Handicap, for which All's Well ruled" favourite. A strong "pace'was set, and ' the contest was interesting throughout. After Sea Elf had flattered the hopes of her admirers to' the distance she faded away, and Dr. Shimoso finishing well, ran homo a winner in front of the top-weight, Coromandel. ■_. A well-conditioned fiold of nino was saddled it upv ; to contest tho Birthday Handicap,' • for ; which Akarana was tho popular fancy, Advocate being second in demand., Aristocrat went out to make the pace, and the son of Explosion was still in command when the half-mile post was reached. ..Waimangu. was tho first to reach tho, Waikato horse, and ho had his rival beaten at tho fcome turn. As they drew up _ to the .'distance Advocate was "descried bearing down with a, fine run, and the' Hotchkiss gelding taking command opposite .the stand, ho ran homo- a winner ; by a length. Tho E pace was right' on throughout, the mile and a-half being cut out in 2m 35 4-sa, ' ■„"' *

The Musket Stakes, which was limited to the two-year-old division, brought out li youngsters, the top-weight, Ashby, being made favourite. The son of Obligado amply justified the confidence, for when his rider asked him to go up and win his raco inside tho distance the chestnut .-. was always a certain winner.

The nine horses coloured on tho card for the Onehunga Steeplechase went to tho post, and when backers got to work on the cross-country event, they speedily 'made First Barrel favourite. Loch Fyno met with a mishap at the water jump, but the others were all standing up when the last round came to be undertaken, and Le Beau and First Barrel racing stride for stride for over half a mile,' excitement was raised to a high pitch. It was all over with First Barrel shortly after tho stone wall was crossed, and Le Beau galloped home an easy winner.

Thirteen horses wore sent out to contest the Maiden Handicap, for which : Urania was made favourite. The daughter of Salvadan never got near the leaders, and the outcome of an interesting raco" was an unexpected victory on the part of Regain, who finished unplaced in the Normanby Handicap, run earlier in the day.

The concluding event, the Epsom Handicap, brought out a field of 10, Tamainupo being a better favourite than Salute, with Bally Shannon best supported of tho others. When it came to racing Salute won easily in fast time, with Sir Artegal and Hyperion in the places. -Sir Artegal put in a brilliant spurt at the finish, but could not reach tho Waikato filly, who was bleeding freely from a wound on the near foreleg.

The following aro the details of the racing:— ''■ _
