HOLIDAY EVENTS.
MANY AND VARIED ATTRACTIONS. To-day »is the 68th birthday of . His Majesty King Edward VII. In commemoration of the event a general holiday is being h«ld to-day, and . Auckland holidaymakers will bo provided with ample fare in ~ the way of amusements.' , •: W*ter 1 excursions <to various : parts , have been ; organised 'by - the Devonport; Ferry and Northern. Steamship Companies, and by Messrs. Biadney and Binnfc, whilst the Awaroa will run an excursion to Waiwera. A number of picriios have been arranged, including the Salvation Army trip to Motutapu and the Central Mission Christian-En-deavour Society's { picnic to Mr. Knox's native bush at. Swanson, in • connection with which a special train will leave Auckland station at-8.55 a.m. Special excursion trains will be run.bythe Railway Department, and these no doubt will be largely availed of. One of the town. fixtures is the parade of the Empire veterans at the Queen Victoria statue in Albert Park, at 11 a.m.. which should prove an v interesting sight. : In the afternoon holiday matinees will be held by the r cinematograph picture - proprietaries in His Majesty's Theatre, the Opera House, and the Royal Albert Hall, whilst in the evening special holiday performances will be given in all the theatres and halls. All the Government offices will be closed, and at the post office the mails usually closing during the day on Tuesday will close at 7.15 thi6 morning. At the Auckland telegraph office the: hours of attendance will be from 9 a.m." to. 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. to midnight. . . The telephone exchange will be open as usual. For the sporting public there is the. attraction of the second day's racing of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting at Ellerslie. * - A large number of athletic and aquatic fixtures have also been arranged. At Eden Park the Eden district cricket club | intend holding a -grand gala, one of the principal attractions being a ladies'cricket match. Almost every - bowling club in and around Auckland !is holding a tournament to-day, one of the principal being at the Auckland Club's green, where, in addition to a tournament, a match between the honorary and house staffs'of the Auckland Hospital will be played. The opening of the yachting season in Auckland takes place to-day. Four of the clubs will meet <>ff . the end of Queen-street Wharf, and, after making a display in the harbour, will thion dismiss, and spend the rest of the day cruising. ' ■ GISBORNE ATTRACTIONS. . The principal attractions • for the King's Birthday holiday are the East Coast Mounted Rifles' sports at the park, and the old settlers' picnic at Patutahi. , The latter gathering is a reunion of settlers who lived in Gisborne prior to the massacre of 1868, and their descendants. .
