PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY.

THE CHURCH AND LABOUR.

[BY telegbafh. PßESS association.] Chbistchcbch, Wednesday. At the Presbyterian General Assembly today the following motion, proposed by Dr. Oibb, was carried :—" That in - view of the urgent need for a better understanding between the Church and organised labour, and, further, in view of the fact that in the Presbyterian Church of America much good has been effected by the adoption of a scheme by which the Church, through its presbyteries, is represented on the labour councils, with a similar consultative representative of their councils on the presbyteries, and fit/ally in view of the fact that the Scottish Presbyterian churches are now contemplating a similar line of action, the Assembly commends consideration of the whole question to the Committee on the State of Religion, with power, if they -deem it wise, to make any preliminary arrangements for the adoption of some such scheme by the Assembly."

Overtures from the Nelson, Auckland, and Oamaru Presbyteries deajing with the diplomatic relations existing between Great Britain and Germany were discussed, a motion being carried to the effect that in view of the strained relations between Britain and the German Empire, with all the threatened calamitous consequences to civilisation, commerce and religion,, the Assembly was of opinion that while it was the duty and privilege of the British nation as a people to do their very utmost to preserve their interest by Jand and sea and defend at all hazards the great heritage which had been entrusted to them by Providence in the markets of the world, it behoved them to maintain a calm and unvindictive Christian spirit. -jl
