The work of putting the telephone cables underground is now proceeding apace. Conduits, or ducts, have been laid up Shortland-strect and along Waterloo Quadrant, with manholes at irregular intervals through which the cables will afterwards be drawn. A similar work is now. in progress in High-street. It is intended to lay ducts to Parnell, up College Hill, and along Karangahape Road, and a section in Ponsonby Road. Queen street will be taken in hand shortly. By the time ducts are laid in these and subsidiary' streets, about 12 months will have elapsed.
