TAMMANY TRIUMPHS.

NEW YORK MAYORALTY.

JUDGE GAYNOR ELECTED. By Telegraph.— Association.— Copyright

(Received November 4, 1 a.m.) New York, November 3There was great excitement in New York yesterday over the election of a Mayor, in succession to .Mr. G. B. McClellan.

The result was a triumph for Tammany Hall, whoso nominee, Mr. Justice Gaynor, was elected with a plurality of 60,000 over Mr. Otto Bannard, the anti-Tammany party's candidate, Mr. W. B. Hearst (the millionaire newspaper proprietor, who was a candidate for the Governorship in 1906 on the Independence League ticket) being third. The vote was below expectations.

The indications are that Mr. Justice Gaynor's colleagues have-been defeated through the Hearst party's solid endorsement of Tammany's Republican opponents.

The fusionists claim to have secured most of the minor offices, including a majority on the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, which authorises all the expenditure.

This control is particularly ..important at this election, as immense suras are likely to be expended on underground railways and other improvements.

The choice of the Tammany organisation fell upon Mr. Justice Gaynor, despite the fact that he had until lately denounced the evils of Tammany Hall and its methods. The new Mayor was born in the State of New York in 1851, and after engaging: in journalism, was admitted to the Bar, where his rise was rapid. He gained a national reputation for his work in breaking up rings within the Democratic party, and his action in securing the conviction of John Y. Kane for election frauds. He was a judge of the appellate division of the Supreme Court and a Democrat in politics. It is of interest to note that he was one of the first to begin the crusade against favouritism in freight rates, an abuse of the American commercial system which had aceumed serious proportions.
