THE SILT QUESTION.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Thames, Wednesday. At the meeting of the Thames Harbour Board last evening considerable discussion took place, regarding the silting question, most of the members being of the opinion that the Board should co-operate with the other local bodies interested, in endeavouring to induce the . Government to revoke the proclamation of the Obinemuri as a sludge channel. The majority of the members expressed the opinion that while it would not be right to favour the agricultural interests at the expense of the mining interests, it was evident to all that the menace to the district generally by the silting up of the Ohinemuri River, and the harbour, had now reached such a stage as to make it imperative that some decisive action should be taken" to remedy the evils as far as possible, and this could only be done - by ; combined action and the assistance of the Government. It was ultimately decided that the chairman (Mr. W, Scott) should .proceed to Wellington to lay the Board's;views on the matter before the Government, in conjunction with'delegates from the other local bodies interested, and- to impress' upon the Government the urgent" necessity for decisive I action ■ being taken as soon as possible. .-■-• y.< •'■' ■'•" - '■'■'■> ■
