C.J.C. SPRING MEETING.

THE NEW ZEALAND CUP. NOTES ON THE TRAINING WORK. [Br "TELEGRAPH. — CORRESPONDENT.] Chbistchurch, Tuesday. ; With tho opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting only a few days distant, interest in the fixture is rapidly in<creasing. Tho prospects for tho meeting could not bo better. Tho chances of the various candidates in the leading events are being freely discussed. So far as the New Zealand Cup is concerned, the ©vent seems more open than ever. All Red looks well, and is galloping strongly, a milo and-a-half which ho accomplished on Monday being the ! best, of the season. This effort, however, was eclipsed this morning by Bobrikoff, who gavo an electrifying display over a mile and a-quarter. Commencing rather slowly, he ran j the first half mile alone, and was then picked up by Chanteuse, the pair running home together. Bobrikoff's time for the 10 furlongs was 2min. 6 4-ssec., and he finished up his . task well. It is' probable that both Bobrikoff and Downfall will start in the twomile race on Saturday. Master Soult is probably suffering from the effects of his recent mishap, and your correspondent will not bo greatly surprised if ho is an absentee from the Cup field. Sandstream galloped remarkably well, and bore out public form this season by appearing to hold Downfall quite safe at the end of a mile: and a-half. Husbandman, who went badly on Saturday, shaped better this morning, when ho reeled off an • attractive mile and a-half. t Prim had no trouble in beating Bolliu over a mile and a-half, and as the paoe was slow in the early stages Bollin'S display was not pleasing. Sir Prize and Lady Lucy were worked together over a mile and a-quarter. Lady Lucy galloped, well, finishing eight lengths in front in 2m. 9 3-ss. Sir Prize was in trouble, all the way, but. ho has the reputation of being no good on the track. Roosevelt galloped well, but Merrie Zealand was easily beaten by Muskerry, while Lawn Rose, who started with them, tailed right off. Grand Slam was not much behind Boutade at the end of a mile and a-quarter. • The effort was not impressive., Tikitere, on tho " other hand, made many fresh friends by her • display over a • mile and a-half. She was going strongly- at the finish, and looked as if she would have run out a ■ good two miles. _ Of the Stewards' Handicap horses, Penates is doing well, and so are Gipsy Belle, Sweet Angelus, and Chanteuse, while sensational accounts are to hand of the track doings of Nautiform at Yaldhurst. .
