ECONOMIES AT ROTORUA.

In carrying out the general scheme of retrenchment in the Government service, changes have had to be made at Eotorua, but these alterations in the interests of economical administration have resulted in a considerable amount of opposition, against which the Minister in charge of tourist and health resorts, the Hon. T. Mackenzie, protests in turn.

,_ When asked by an interviewer at Wellington how the reorganisation was proceeding, Mr. Mackenzie replied that while there could be no doubt that the work done at Rotorua by the Government was calculated to bo of great value to the public and to the Dominion, the difficulties in connection wth the management of State institutions were great. "It appears almost impossible to make any move without causing friction to such nn extent as to render it almost impossible to carry on such institutions on anything approaching economical lines," continued the Minister. "If, in the opinion of those who claim to be qualified to judge, retrenchments are necessary, you are immediately met with protests from those who declare that the proposnd alterations are prompted either by political influence or personal incapacity. Ono would like to locate oneself in Rotorua for about a month to grasp all the lines, and see the best courso to pursue."
