Dr. W. E. Thomas returned to Auckland from Napier yesterday, after adjudicating at the musical competitions at that centre.

Mrs. Ngata is spending a few days at Auckland. The Hon. A. T. Ngata left for Wellington by the Main Trunk tram on Monday night.

Mr. J. H. Kelk, of Te Aroha, was a passenger by the Victoria for Sydney on Monday night, his intention being to sail in the Marmora for London, where he enters upon mission work.

Mr. S. Gilchrist Thompson, of Seven Oaks, England, left for the thermal district by express yesterday morning. He intends to travel to Marton via Wairakei and the Wanganui River.

The Acting-Prime Minister (Hon. James Carroll) arrived at Napier last night, overland from Gisborne and Waixoa (says a Press Association message), and he leaves by train in the morning for Wellington.

Mr. John Sturrock, the newly-appointed town engineer for the borough of Invercargill, is 55 years of age, and a native of Scotland. *He served his time with Sir William Robertson Copland, M. Inst. C.E., Glasgow, one of the leading engineers of Scotland, was for a time resident engineer to the Lanarkshire Steelwork Extension ! scheme, and subsequently entered the office as chief engineer of the Caledonian Railway . Company (Scotland). He arrived in New Zealand 15 months ago,, and has since been engaged by Mr. W. H. Morton, city engineer of Wellington.
