THE MIDDLESEX MATCH.

PLAY INTERRUPTED BY RAIN.

. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyilght. London, August 23. The Australians commenced their match with Middlesex lit Lord's to-day, the homo team comprising the following: — F. Warner (captain), F. A. Tarr&jat, J. D. Douglas, D. Hendren, G. Robertson, H. R. Murrell, A. E. Trott, E. Mignon, C. M. Wills, J. F. Hearne, and W. P. Harrison.

It was raining up to luncheon, and a start was not made till 12.20 p.m.,- when the wicket was easy, and Warner, winning the toss, decided to make first use of it.

Rain caused frequent delays, and kept the wicket easy all day. Warner and Douglas opened, and the latter played an excellent innings of 41 before being caught by Cotter off Hopkins. He was in for 45 minutes and hit four fours. 1—62—41.

Hendren, who followed, made some good hits off Hopkins, and the century was reeled off in 80 minutes. With his total at 29 Hendren was caught by Cotter off Runsford. 2—118—29.

. Tarrant, the ex- Victorian, came next, and, owing to rain, stumps were drawn at 5.40, with the score at 177 for two wickets.

Warner played flawless cricket for 77 not out. Armstrong bowled with wonderful steadiness, sending down nine overs in succession for three runs.
