FOR THE PUBLIC SAFETY.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Saturday. With the formal ceremony of throwing open the Stewart Crossing bridge, at Nuhaka, by the Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. Jas. Carroll) this afternoon, there disappears one more of those dangerous river crossings of the East Coast that have been responsible for the loss of many lives. In this instance one life has been claimed almost annually and sometimes more. The structure opened to-day has been erected after many years of agitation,, the initiative having been taken by the Wairoa County Council. It is a truss bridge, comprising two 90ft spans and four land spans measuring 40ft each.
