DURABILITY OF KAHIKATEA. [FROM OVR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Dargavuxe, Saturday. The durability of kahikatea is often questioned, but an exemplification of its lasting powers is to be seen at Dargaville. Some 35 years ago the late Mr. J. M. Dargaville instituted a trade in baulk timber between the Wairoa and China, and some fine shipments of kauri and kahikatea spare were exported by the barques Moss Glen, Glimpse, and Ada WisswellOn one occasion, two white pine "spars, each 40ft long and 12in square, were rafted down too late for shipment,. and were then utilised in the construction of a landingslip. To-day the dip is still extant, and the kahikatea, spare at a recent investigation were found to be as solid and serviceable as ever. For 35 years they have been tide-covered twice daily, and although several times re-decked, and punctured by various means, their soundness is indisputable.. -
