MAORI FOOTBALLERS.
DEFEATED BY AUSTRALIANS. 23 POINTS TO 16. By Telegraph— Association.—Copyright. (Received August 22, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, August 22. About 10,000 spectators were present at the match between the Maori footballers and the Australian team yesterday. The first half was a walk-over for the Australians, the spell ending in their favour by 10 points to 3. Papakura secured a try, which Asher failed to convert. The second spell opened with prospects of an easy time for the locals, five points being added in the first few minutes. Then Powhiuwhiu scored, but failed to convert his own try. The same player immediately after placed an easy goal from a penalty. The Australians, however, kept the score growing until it reached 21 against their opponents' 10. Then Kopuna secured a try, but Asher failed to convert. The locals added two points by a penalty goal, and just on time Pakero crossed the line, but Asher again failed, the scores at call of time being: Australians, 23 points; Maoris, 16.
