REFUSED A LANDING.

The restrictions placed on the landing of alleged undesirables arriving in New Zealand from clsewhero acts peculiarly in some cases. An embargo was placed on a recent arrival from London by the Corinthic, tho Wellington Customs authorities, acting under advice from tho health officer of that port, refusing to allow him to become a citizen of tho Dominion, despite the fact that ho had some time previously been a resident here for some years, and has relations in the Auckland Province. Acting on behalf of this person (says a Wellington exchange), an institution communicated with his brother, stating that before the Customs authorities would permit him to land two bondsmen (at £100 each) were required as a guarantee that the man would not become a burden on the State. A brother arranged for tho bondsmen, and wired accordingly to Wellington, but tho Collector of Customs has intimated to interested parties that such will not suffice, well-known residents of Wellington (the port of disembarkation) being required. Tins requirement makes the effort to detain the man in the Dominion very awkward, as the brother is a resident of a small town in a remote part of the Auckland district. In tho meantime tho latter has been advised that his brother is to be sent back to England by the steamer Otaki, and the only hope ho has of detaining him is to come personally to Wellington, and arrange for. bondsmen there.. Another feature of the case is the fact that the man was passed by the High Commissioner's Office, and given an assisted passage, and the usual passport issued to such people by the High Commissioner's office in London.
