TE AKAU NATIVE LANDS.

OPENING OF FIRST PORTION.

SOME FURTHER PURCHASES. A portion of the Te Akau Block, which was purchased from the natives by the Government a year or two ago, will be open for selection under the optional system ai Auckland and Ngaruawahia on October 11. This part of the block, which has been roamed by the Lands Department, consists of some 14,000 acres of some of the best, land in the block. There have already been a large number of inquiries in regard to it, and a. record application list is expected. The ballot will take place on October 15.

As recently announced, the Lands Department have lately entered into negotiations for the purchase of further portions of the Te Akau Block, situated to the north and south of the portion already purchased, that to the north being the property of the Ngatitahinga tribe, whilst that to the south is owned by the Tainui tribe. Mr. R. A. Patterson, chief accountant of the Lauds Department, is now in the district in connection with the purchase of this land, which is. not yet concluded.

A sitting of the Native Land Court will be held at Ngaruawahia on September 23 for the purpose of dealing with the Moetangi Block, consisting of some 45,000 acres. About half a dozen hapus of the Waikato and Ngatimaniapoto tribes are interested in the land.
