THE COLD WEATHER.

SNOW NORTH OF AUCKLAND.

QtR Rawene correspondent reports that an unprecedented fall of snow occurred at 4 p.m. on Wednesday on the Whakatere Range, extending from Waima to Whirinaka. A portion of the snow was still discernible yesterday morning. Old residents of the Hokianga district were astounded at the sight. Passengers who arrived in Auckland by the .Main Trunk train yesterday state that the weather was very rigorous during the .journey. The ranges round Palmerston North were snow-clad, and snow on the high 'land on the Main Trunk contributed to make the weather more chilly.

Our Waiouru correspondent telegraphs .hat the weather there is very cold, with mow falling.

Heavy rain is being experienced at Wan tamii (says a Press Association telegram), and during the last five days about 3in have fallen. The weather is now bright, though very cold, and snow fell on the hills during t [Wednesday night and a little in town—a

■very rarasuul occurrence. The road between Wanganui and Wangaehu is blocked by a big slip. Low-lying parts of the country are under water.

k. Suburban residents declare there was a heavy frost on Wednesday night. The readings of the thermometer, as supplied 'by Mr. T. F. Cheeseman, prove that though there might have been what is ■ popularly termed a "hoar" frost, it was not. such, a frost as could be recognised by a man of science. The minimum tem- , perature for the r24 hours ended nine I yesterday was 34 degrees, or two degrees above freezing. The maximum shade temperature -was 48 degrees, -which is very low for Auckland, for however cold the night may be, the temperature usually gets into the fifties by mid-day.
