MINING NEWS.

NEW WAITAIA.

TEN POUNDS OF PICKED STONE.

The secretary of the New Waitaia Gold Mining Company (Mr. W. R. Holmes) was i advised as follows by telegram by the mine manager yesterday:—"Broke down' rise No. 5 and intermediate levels; 101b of picked (stone. Reef is 18in wide, showing dabs and patches of gold throughout."

Reporting on the 16th inst. the mine manager states: —"The reef in the rise. from No. 5 level looks much better sincefinishing breaking down, it being fully 2ft wide and showing strong gold. The stono which camo to hand is very rich, goodsized patches of coarse gold being well distributed throughout, and from the promising appearance of the reef, combined with the firm, free country encasing it, it lead* mo to consider we have not yet,, got the best .of it. In the rise above the intermediate level the reef continues strong and of good value. This rise should break through about 50ft south of where the rich ore was obtained and sunk on in the floor of No. 4- level. The reef in the south drive at No. 5 level is increasing in size; the country also is showing an improvement, being much firmer, and I hope to bo able to report payable values very shortly. At the battery the repairs, etc., are well in hand. The agitating vats aro finished and inside gearing is now being erected. WATCHMAN. The secretary of. the Watchman Gold Mining Company (Mr. J. W. Nichol) was advised yesterday that an assay made by the Thames School of Mines of a sample taken at 13ft from the winze gave £3 13s 8d per ton. DIXON'S CONSOLIDATED. At a meeting of shareholders in the Dixon's Consolidated Gold Mining Company yesterday afternoon it was decided to delete clause 26 of the articles of association and substitute the following:—"The directors may, in their uncontrolled discretion, decline to register any transfer of shares made by a member who is indebted to the company, or to a transferee who is not approved of by them, and shall not be bound or required to state their reasons for refusal."

WAIHI EXTENDED. , The manager of tho "VVaihi Extended mljie, Waihi, reports that during the week driving has been continued on the No. 2 lode* the reef showing an improvement as tho drive advances, being stronger and more settled. In No. 5 winze the reef is making stronger, with an improved appearance, compared with the starting-point in that level. In the south-east crosscut the face was broken out on the 17th iust.. exposing 2it of the lode on one sido of tho drive. As only a portion of the reef is exposed its nature or importance cannot be estimated. So far it has tho appearance of a strong and promising lode, and in a • few clays it should be opened fully. ROYAL OAK. Tho manager of the Royal Oak mine telegraphed yesterday stating that colours of. gold had been seen in breaking down in .the winze that day. TELLURIDE ORE. A strong Auckland syndicate has acquired 500 acres in the Maratoto district, including the Gordon, Boomerang, Irvine, Volunteer, and Musketeer gold mining claims, on all of which it is reported 1 that telluridc ore has been discovered. Active prospecting is now in progress, and shortly two rock drills, an. air compresser, and suction gas plant will be installed. ~.--. ■;

. '~ NOTES. y [ The drive in the 'low'level- iii the Kapowai mine, Kapowai, has now < reached; a, point where it is intended to rise. The rise will be started this week. ■ ;a *V

In the - Tairua Reefs mine; Tairua, the drive is now in WOft. Tlio country passed through last week was of a firmer nature, . and of a first-class description for carrying : gold-bearing reefs. ■ '

Driving on the north and south faces has been continued in the Mount Zeehan mine. In the south end firmer country is now making in the face, and gives a favourable impression. In the north end there is nothing fresh to report. The reef still continues to look well, and the country rock is the most favourable. ... >' : ■

In the Mountain King mine driving north has been advanced 10ft. The country is still of a nice firm nature, and of a good description for carrying gold-bearing reefs, being highly mineralised. • Driving north at the intermediate level has also been advanced Bft. The country is a nice firm class of andesite, no change having taken place. About 15ft of reef has been -stripped,, and will be taken down early next week. ;:

In the Occidental mine, Thames, a crosscut has been started on the western side, of the main flinty, with the object of cutting the Occidental reef. This should! bo done in about 20ft. The country being penetrated is of a hard description, similar to that which surrounded tho big patch which was worked formerly. The upper level has collapsed for some .distance, but the manager cannot yet say how far. '

No. 5 level in the' Four-in-Hand " initio has been advanced sft, the country being still very hard. Driving north on the Four-in-Hand reef at. the No. 3 level has been commenced* and the reef has doveloped very* well, showing gold, and is in an excellent class of country. The reef going north is intact, this portion having never been worked, and the presence, of gold should indicate another,, run, , apart from the run previously worked.

Good progress is being made in the Handsworth mine with the drive south from the low level on the No. 2 leader. The country is a blue, short, jointy aiulesite. and is such that the leader may carry gold at any day. In No. 2 level the work of cleaning up and retimbering is practically completed, and sinking will lie at once started at this point. Although the winzo will not be started on" the richest of. the gold, but-will be put down so as to work the block to the best advantage, still "the •manager feels confident shareholders will not, have long to wait for good results. Two men have started driving the crosscut to cut Huntly's reef at Irene section,'. the intention being to let it on contract if the country improves, which there is every chance of it doing as it ; gets away?" froir (the main reef.
