THE RETRENCHMENT SCHEME.
GISBORNE STAMP DEPARTMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Wednesdaj'. It was stated at a deputation to the Hon. J. Carroll, in reference to the proposal to remove the Gisborne Stamp Department, that the total revenue collected by tho local Department last year ranged between £10,000 and £12,000. In answer to the deputation, Mr. Carroll said the proposal for the removal of the Stamp Department was a portion of the Government's retrenchment policy, which included the remodelling of the Stamp Department's work. There could be no objection to the sale of duty stamps by the post office, but' the other duties of the office required consideration, and 'before an alteration could be effected an Act of Parliament would bo required. They were giving attention to the complaints that were pouring in from all parts of the country, but local officers would not, he thought, bo removed. = As to deceased persons' estates, the machinery would not be very much altered.
