The Rev. H. A. Hawkins was a passenger for New Plymouth by the west coast steamer yesterday.

Mr. J. A. Salmond, of Dunedin, returned by the Navua from a trip to the Islands, and left .'last night for the South.

Mr. H. S. Appleton, an American tourist, arrived by the Navua. Mr. Appleton, •who comes from New York, intends to tour New Zealand.

Mr. H. MHz, a German visitor to New .land, arrived in Auckland yesterday by the Main Trunk train. He is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Mr. and Mrs. G. de Beniczky, of Hungary, arrived in Auckland by the Navua, and will leave shortly for Rotorua and other parts of New Zealand.

Mr. George Allen and Mr. A. Mcßobert, both of London, arrived by the Navua from .Sydney. Both arc staying at the Grand Hotel." and will leave shortly on a tour of New Zealand.

Messrs. E. and B. Dodge, of New York, arrived in Auckland on Tuesday by the Navua from Suva. They are staying at. tho Grand Hotel, and intend, to proceed to Rotorua and other resorts.

Mr. Stephen Hart, of the firm of Din\ond a.'id Hart, Wellington, who has been confined to his home for the past 12 months, died or. Monday evening at his residence in Karori. The deceased gentleman had resided in Wellington ever since his arrival in New Zealand, some 18 years ago, when he, with the late Mr. Dimond, established the business which bears their name. . Mr. Hart leaves six children, Messrs. Henry S. and F. 0. Hart, Misses' Marion, Olive, Elsie, and Mona Hart. Mrs. Hart predeceased her husband some five years ago.

The long and valuable services rendered to the cause of primary education by Mr L. J. Bagnall were referred to at the meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday by the chairman (Mr. C. J. Parr). Mr. Bagnall, he pointed out, had been a member of the Board for many years, and had been its chairman on no fewer than five occasions. They were sorry to lose such an old member, but the decision of the public was supreme in these matters. Several other members also spoke very highly of Mr. Bagnall's services, and on the chairman's motion it was resolved „to place on record the Board's' appreciation of these services.
