A humorous reply was given by the Minister for Justice to a request made to him in Timaru on Saturday. Mr. J. Craigie, M.P., presented a petition from the residents of Glen-iti, praying that the constable who did duty among the rolling downs of that district should be supplied with a horse instead of a bicycle. The Minister gravely informed Mr. Craigie that the matter had not yet received the consideration of Cabinet. The responsibility for the matter lay with the inspector, , or, perhaps, the Commissioner of Police. He could not say what the reasons were for giving the, constable a bicycle instead of a horse. A bicycle did not consume a great amount of food, and « a horse might have been , eating its head ' ' off in the stable. He would appreciate the fact thai/ a horse would lend itself more to the dignity of the constable than ft bicycle, but if a saving could be-effected it should be effected. Courtesy demanded that 'he should refer the request to the officer.in. charge, and he would see that that was done. Mr. Craigie, who evidently appreciated the situation, explained that the petition had been given him for presentation, and he had simply carried out - his duty to his constituents.
