AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.
A PACIFIC SQUADRON.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.—
Melbourne, August 6. Iy connection with Colonel Foxton's cabled statement with reference to'the naval subsidy, Mr. Deakin, replying to questions in the Federal House of Representatives, said that Colonel Foxton was justified in making the statement he had made as to Australia's willingness to share in any Imperial ; scheme : of defence. ; " According to other Federal Ministers the assumption, which had been given currency, that Australia was to agree with New Zealand and other parts of the Empire in raising a loan to create a cruiser squadron in the Pacific, was wholly unwarranted. It had not yet been settled that any cruiser fleet was to be formed, or presentation of cruisers to be made, alternate to the Dreadnought offer. No proposition of the kind had' been cabled from the Defence. Conference .to the . Government here.
