SLANDERING LANDOWNERS.

SUGGESTED PROSECUTION.

MR. LLOYD-GEORGE'S SPEECH.

By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright.

(Received August 7, 1.10 a.m.)

London, August 6. The Duke of Westminster has received communications from, several correspondents calling his attention to statements in Mr. Lloyd-George's Limehouse speech regarding the selfishness of landowners, and mentioning a number of specific cases showing strong evidence to the contrary. The correspondents have asked the Duke of Westminster to prosecute Mr. Lloyd-George for mis-state-ments.

In reply the Duke of Westminster says that, considering Mr. LloydGeorge's personal idiosyncrasies, the best defence is to trust to the fairness and sense of decency still inherent to the community.

Mr. Lloyd-George (Chancellor of the Exchequer), speaking at Limehouse a few days ago, said that land was not merely for enioyment, but for stewardship. Unless the landlords discharged the duties attaching to ownership, the time would come to coneider the conditions under which land- was held. His resolve in framing the Budget was that no cupboard should be bare, and no lot hard to bear.
