London, August 4. General Sir F. Forestier Walker has been temporarily appointed to succeed the Duke of Connaught as commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, which post the King's brother resigned on the ground that it was a sinecure and an unnecessary expense to the nation.

General Sir F. . Forestier Walker, Governor of Gibraltar since 1905, has seen a good deal of active service, having served in the Kaffir war of 1877-78, the Zulu war in. 1879, and commanded troops in Egypt in 1889-95. He also took a hand in the operations against the Boers from 1899 to 1901.
