EXPORT OF WHEAT.

A CORRECTED RETURN-

[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Christcuurch, Friday. Ik view of the fact that there arc only about 2,000,000 bushels of wheat for export this year, the progress of the shipping of this cereal is naturally of some interest. The monthly leaflet issued by the Department of Industries and Commerce is looked to as giving the correct quantities of produce exported, but it was surprising to find that, according to the Department's return, the total quantity of wheat shipped during the three months ended June 30 amounted to only 557,938 bushels. It will be remembered that when certain statements were made in Auckland regarding the disposal of the surplus, it was shown that, according to the Customs returns obtained, privately, the amount of wheat shipped up to the end of May was 521,543 bushels, and only some 19,000 bushels of this was shipped prior to the beginning of the June quarter. Inquiries made from' a local firm, which keeps a record of grain shipments, made up from information obtained from the Customs Department, found that the total quantity of wheat exported to the end of June was 839,547 bushels. This is exclusive of the cargo of the Nairnshire, which left Lyttelton on June 26. It will be seen, therefore, that up to the end of June close upon one million bushels.of wheat were shipped, stead of a little over half-a-million bushels, as stated in the Department's leaflet.
