MARINE SIGNALLING.
A POWERFUL LAMP.
[BY TELEGRATH—-OWN 1 CORRESPONDENT.]
* Wellington', Friday. A Mouse signalling lamp of great power has just been fit-ted on the Union Steam Ship Company's tug Terawhiti. It will be strongly visible at sea at a distance of some 10 or 15 miles, but in communicating with high land it will he seen for fully. 20 to 25 miles. It is on the bridge of the Terawhiti,, which is not very high above the water, but on the masthead of a bigger vessel the arc. of visibility of the lamp would bo much greater. In the case of marine disaster the lamp would be invaluable, as the; Terawhiti could signal any. message to a high point some two hours before she reached it, and could deliver a message by night without coming into port at all, and having don© so could resume operations at sea.
