ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND HARRIERS' RUN. The Auckland Harriers will, weather permitting, meet at Kingsland cricket, ground to-day, at 2.30 p.m., when the weekly run will take place. A message from Seattle gives details of an extraordinary accident which occurred there on May 13, in which 61 people were injured, five of them fatally. A Marathon race was being run, and every vantage point along the route was crowded with spectators. Two hundred people were gathered on a balcony at. the .Militia Armoury, and when the runners drew near they pressed forward with such eagerness to catch a glimpse of the race that the rail fronting the balcony broke, and they were precipitated 15ft* on to the heads of people standing below. Some were injured in the fall, and others in the panic that followed. The incident seriously hampered the progress of the race. Information is to hand r.fiat the awaited 15 miles race between Shrubh, who visited New Zealand a few years ago, and the Frenchman, St. Yves, took place at tho American League Park, New York, on April 2*, over a six-laps to the mile track, and resulted in victory for the Enclishman, who covered the distance in lh. 26ni. 125., finishing lm. 465. ahead of his rival. St. Yves is the, athlete who created a now Marathon record in New York recently. There is, of course, a big difference between the 15 miles raced by Shrubb and St Yves and the " Marathon" distance of over 26 miles. No man in the world could beat Shrubb at 15 miles, but there are, at least, four or five able to account for him in a "Marathon" event. ,
