A LIFE-SAVING TUG. | The United States revenue service possesses a life-saving tup, the Snohomish, built for service on the Pacific in tlie vicinity of Puget Sound. She is in model and construction much like a first-class ocean-going tug. She is 152 ft long overall and 29ft beam, with a mean draught of 12ft 4in, with 125 tons of coal and 11,000 gallons of water on board. The vessel has a speed of 13 to 14 knots, and at 12 knots has a coal capacity to carry her 3000 miles. Her most interesting and novel equipment is the special marine cableway designed for taking passengers and crew from a wrecked ship, which it is impossible to approach by lifeboats. The apparatus is nothing more nor litss than the breaches buoy apparatus modified to meet the special conditions of its use between two ships in a seaway. After anchoring thQ tug at a working distance from the stranded vessel a connection is made by line snd , hawser, as is done by the life-savers from the beach, with the exception that ingenious devices are provided to pay out ■or , take'in atuoraatically the slack of the" hawser to which the breeches buov is attached, as the pitching and rolling of, the tup necessitates. It is stated that in a period of 50 year* 700 jives have been lost by shipwreck in the Straits; of Juan de Fuca .nd vicinity, which is the entrance to Puget Sound, and will be the Snohomish's , station. . ■ • v ; THE CENTURY. i' The ; Australian Mail liner Century took her departure from San Francisco for Auckland, via Apia, on May 12, and is expected t<> put in an' appearacce here about June 9. • the flora; * The Union Company's steamer Flora, Captain W.
