BANKRUPTCY.
— ♦■ At the Supremo Court yesterday William Wolf Benjamin, described as a receiving and forwarding agent, of Auckland, , and trading as S. W. Hill and Co., was adjudged a bankrupt on the petition of Win. John Nicholson, Customhouse and shipping agent, of Auckland. The first meeting of creditors is to be held at the office of the official assignee (Mr. E. Gerard) on April 1. Debtor was not present when the adjudication was made. BURGLARS RUIN BUSINESS. The sworn statement of Edward James Miln'es, tailor, Thames, who recently filed a petition in bankruptcy, has been lodged with the official assignee. Tlio bankrupt states that he started business in 1891 with £-30 borrowed capital. Ho got along- fairly well till in 1900 his shop was broken into and goods to the value of over £50 stolen. He moved to different premises, and from that time his business began to go behind. In 1904 his shop was again broken into, and on this occasion goods worth £30 were stolon. Both cases were reported to the police, but with no result. In August, 1905, bankrupt's wife • mortgaged her homo for £200 to assist him. This money was used in the business. In 1906 an accident confined bankrupt to his bed for. six months, and he could only get about on crutches for a further six months. This completely ruined his 19C6 Christmas trade, ana since then ho had been unable to meet his obligations. Pressure from two creditors had caused him to file. Bankrupt sets forth his liabilities to 38 creditors at £796 8s 2d, and his assets at £266 19s lOd, leaving a deficiency of £529 8s 4d. The first meeting of creditors is called for the 29th inst at the official assignee's office.
