BOROUGH COUNCIL.

DEVONPORT. At the meeting of the Devonport Borough Council last nlgflit there were present: The Mayor (Mr. W. Handles') and Messrs. Timewell, McLean, Osborne, McCallum, 11. wilding, G. McKenzic, Cranch, and Froude. By-laws: Messrs. I>evore, Martin, and Prendcrgast, the Council's solicitors, wrote in reference to the Council's powers to amend its by-laws. It was resolved to hold a special meeting next Tuesday to confirm the by-laws and that' a pjblic, meeting be held a month later in connection therewith. ' Waitcmata Golf Club: A letter was received from Dr. Urattan Guiness, of the Waitemata Golf Club, offering to lease the old cemetery reserve. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee. Ferry Service: A communication was received from the Devonport Steam Ferry Company forwarding copy of a letter sent to the Harbour Board in reply to a Mr. H. Evans' complaint regarding tho Buru being run on the Stanley Bay service., The letter to the Harbour Board stated that there are several trips on the Stanley Bay service on which very few passengers travel; therefore it was impossible for the company to run a liirgo ferry steamer to convey a small number of passengers. The company assured the Board that the Bum was seldom run on this service, and never on busy trips, nor was there any intention of running her on the Stanley Bay service except on occasional trips. The Mayor moved that the letter be received. He reminded the Council that he and Mr. Timewell had waited on tho Ferry Company. He explained that he had not stated that ho objected to the Bum under certain conditions, but he had strongly arid emphatically objected to the boat altogether. The letter was received. Charged Erroneously: The Finance and Legal Committee recommended the transfer of £488 7s 4d from the loan account to tho credit of the general account, such amount having been charged the latter account in error. , The recommendation was adopted. Outstanding Rates: The Finance and Legal Committee also recommended that 14 days' notice be given to thoce ratepayers whose rates were now due and outstanding, and at the expiry of the time mentioned the matter be handed over to the Council's solicitors for immediate collection. The recommendation was adopted. Grove Road Buildings: It was decided to act on the Finance and Legal Committee's recommendation that permits for buildings in course of erection in Grove Road and future permits be withheld until consent be obtained from propertyowners to necessary conditions.
