BOROUGH COUNCILS.

Hi vv i.u ja rvjvc. x. . • • Those present at the-fortnightly meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening were the Mayor (Mr. F. Bennett), and Messrs. W. Edgerley, F. Borgolte, A. Seccombe, H. Kinder, J. McColl, ; and R. Holmes. - '

Suburban Water Supply: A letter was received from the Remuera Road Board in regard to the obtaining of a water supply for the districts of Parnell, Newmarket, Ellerslie, Otahuhu, and Remuera from Hunua or some other suitable source, and the Council was asked to appoint two delegates to attend a meeting to be held within four weeks, for the purpose of considering the matter. The Mayor and the chairman ot the Works Committee were appointed to attend the meeting. A second letter was received from Parnell Borough, asking the Council to appoint delegates to meet in conference to consider the question of having an improved water supply for local bodies. he Mayor, with Messrs. Kinder and McColl, were appointed delegates to attend the conference. A still further,letter in regard to the obtaining of a water supply for the suburban local authorities was received from the Grey Lynn Borough Council, which invited the Council to consider the advisability of holding a conference to consist of not more than three members of each of the local bodies interested. The Mayor said there was no doubt that the local bodies were paying too much for their water, but if they wentin for an independent supply they should lend their support to a comprehensive one. It was decided' that a reply be sent to Grey Lynn, stating that this Council was willing to consider the question of appointing dolegates to attend a conference. Street Hawkers: Mr. Borgolto complained of street hawkers having stalls under the verandahs, and in the Newmarket borough, when they had only city licenses. It was {jointed out that in any case where the borough by-laws were violated it was only necessary to call the attention of the- police to tho matter, and they would proceed under the by-laws. Letters: Mr. McColl mentioned that the letters in Newmarket were not delivered to | tho business men in the centre of the borough until after 10 o'clock. He moved that the postal authorities be asked to endeavour ,to deliver the letters to business men a little earlier in the morning, more especially as there were no private boxes provided. Superannuation: A letter was received from the New t Zealand Municipal '< Association, saying that it was proposed to start a superannuation fund for the employees of municipal councils., county councils, and harbour boards, asking if the Council would be prepared to contribute a proportion of the wages towards the funds, and if so what proportion. . The _ letter was referred to the Finance Committee. GREY LYNN. At the meeting of . the Grey Lynn Borough Council last night there! were present:—The Mayor (Mr. G. Sayers), and Messrs. A. Donald, Garland, Dimery, Smith, Muldoon, and Murray. The Council passed the following special orders, among others:-— the purpose of providing interest and sinking fund and other charges on a loan of £32,000, authorised by the Council under the provisions of the Local Bodies' Loans Act," 1903) and its amendments for the purpose of various public works a special rate of lj'd in tho £ be struck on the unimproved value of all ratable propertty in the borough, such rate being an annual recurring rate during the currency of the loan for 33 years, or until the loan be paid off, and for the purpose of providing interest, sinking fund, and other charges on a loan of £12,500 authorised to be raised by the Council for , the carrying out of public works, a special rate of 7-16ths of a penny in the £ be struck on the unim-. proved value of ratable property in the borough, the same conditions to be observed.

ONEHUNGA. " The meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was attended by Messrs. John Rowo (Mayor), W. Co Hedge, sen., S. R. Skinner, J. Glanfield, A. S. Holmes, N. A. Why to,' and J. Stoupe. Water Extension: On behalf of residents at Penrose, Mr. Claude Purchas wrote asking whether the Council would lay a main lin or more in diameter along Morris' Road to O'Rorke-street, and if so, on what conditions. The letter was referred to the Council in committee, nothing: to be done in tho meantime until the agreement is signed by the One-tree Hill Road Board, whereby the Council will b>* endowed with authority to, place pipes in that district. , Alfred-street: Mr. E. Watson complained that although certain improvements were, promised in Alfred-street the month allowed had passed and yet nothing had been done. He alleged that "kissing went by favour" at Onehunga,. , . Superannuation The Municipal Association of New Zealand stated that a movement was being made with a view to establishing a- joint fund for employees of councils, county councils, and harbour boards. Tho association desired to know what percentage of wages or contribution the Council would give to the fund, also the number of employees. Mr. Holmes thought the matter was one for the s employees * themselves to consider, after which the Council could sec what was* best' to do. The matter was referred to the Council in committee. Leave Granted: Captain W. C. Hill, who is also foreman of works, was granted leave of absence to attend the United Fire Brigades' Demonstration. • r?- '. r/'* ' V Tenders: The following tenders were-re-ceived for tho leasing of Nos. 1, 2, and 3, portions of the Recreation Reserve:— B.
