The military events at the Franklin Agricultural Show, held at Pukekohe on Saturday last, were very well contested, and provided some good sport. In the leading race there were six competitors, representing the Pukekohe, Franklin, and Waiuku Mounted Rifles and after a keen contest Private Ward secured first place and Sergeant Paton second. Both these men belong to the Franklin Mounted Rifles. Corporal Hosking was unfortunate with his lead horse, which got away from him at the first and second hurdles. Two sections of fours faced the judges for the Lloyd-Lindsay, viz., Sergeant Paton's (Franklin M.R.) and Sergeant Wilkinson's (Pukekohe M.R.). Sergeant Wilkinson had the bad luck to have a spill at the first hurdle, and this, together with a broken girth, spoilt his chances of winning. Sergeant Paton's four put up a good performance, and so won this event. The Victoria Cross competition, an event which always appeals to the public, was, perhaps," the most interesting of all. Four starters took part, and were sent away in heats of two. Corporal Hosking, Waiuku Mounted Riiles, won the first heat, and Private V. Barriball, of the same squadron, proved the winner of the other, and so it became a contest between two comrades, to decide the first and second places. -.After a close run, Corporal Hosking was declared. winner by a nose. Private Ward, of the Franklin Mounted Rifles, had the misfortune to have "a bad fal'' during this event, and was kicked in the face., losing some teeth and receiving a bad flesh wound on the cheek. But it" takes a lot to kill a soldier. '
