MAJOR Tatum left for Wellington 1 yesterday, via the West Coast. Mr. C. H. Izard, ex-M.P. for Wellington, returned South by the Rarawa yesterday. Mr. J. H. Pollock, handicapper to the Wellington Racing Club, is at present on a visit to Auckland. Mr. Michael Dromgool. of Waiuku, who recently underwent a severe operation, is progressing favourably towards recovery. Mr. J. R. Vaile, of the Auckland Survey Office, has been transferred to Dunedin. The vacancy thus caused has been filled by Mr. McKeflar. Two well-known residents of Grey mouth, Mr. and Mrs. Gieseking. are at present on a visit to Auckland. They are staying *t the Imperial Hotel. Captain J. Benton, of the *.*. Squall, »ia« been appointed master of the Hamoto, fn<l Captain Ross, late chief officer of the Mcioia, has taken command of the Squall. Mr. D. Buick, M.P.. was entertained at a social at Palmerston North last evening (savs a Press Association message). Speeches were delivered by Messrs. V\ . F. Massey, Newman, and Guthrie. M.P.'s. Madame Ada Crowley and her husband {Dr. Muecke) arrived in Auckland yesterday bv the express from Hamilton, after spending a week's holiday at Rotortia. They are staying with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Kirker at Ponsonby. Mr. James McGregor, a prominent grain grower, of Winnipeg, Canada, and Dr. Robert McGregor, ot Saginaw. Michigan, U.S.A., who have been in the Auckland district for the past 10 days, leave this morning for New Plymouth and Wellington. Mr. H. T. Maclean, who held the position of librarian to the Auckland Law Society, died yesterday, after a brief illness, at the'age of 45. The deceased gentleman, who was the only son of the late Captain H. T. Maclean, was widely known and respected.
Mr. Bart. Kent was nominated as presi- j dent of the Auckland Chamber of Com- i merce, and Mr. M. M. McCallum as vicepresident, at the meeting of the council of the Chamber yesterday. The nominations -were made by Mr. L. J. Bagnall, the retiring president.
The Hon. A. W. Hogg, Minister for Labour, was entertained by his constituents at a banquet at Mastodon, last evening, in honour of his elevation to the Ministry (gays a Press Association message). Hie "lion. D. Biuldo, Minister for Public Health, was amongst those present.
The members of the Auckland Master Butchers' Association tendered a social to Mr. J. H. Garrett in the Federal Clubroom, Wellesley-street, last evening, Mr. Jabez Marks presiding. Mr. Garrett, together with Mrs. and Miss Garrett, purpose making an extended trip to the Old Country. *He has held the position of treasurer to the association since its inception, and in recognition of his services in that capacity and of his helpful work in connection with the association in other directions, the members presented him with a smoker's companion, consisting of a case of silver-mounted pipes and a gold matchbox. A very pleasant evening was spent.
