AUSTRALIAN SCULPTOR.

London, February 10. The Times describes the bust of William Howard Russell, which has just, been executed by Mr. Bertram Mackennal, the Australian sculptor, as one of the few thoroughly satisfactory works which St. Paul's crypt contains, adding that scluptors generally recognise that Mr. Mackennal is one of the men most likely to further the advance made by sculpture in England during the past 20 years.
Mr. Mackennal is a native of Victoria, having been horn at Melbourne in 1865. He studied chiefly in Paris, and for some years past Inn reside 1 in England, where he has executed most of his memorable work. His special >:• mmissions include the war memorial at Islington, a. statue of Queen Victoria, for the town of Blackburn, Yorkshire, monument to the late Robert La chile nt Woking, ;uid a bust of the bite Sir Edward Knox, of Sydney. He designed the figures in the allegorical group for the pediment of the new Government Buildings at Westminster. His marble of " Diana," shown last year, was declared to be exquisitely chiselled, making one of the most beautiful nudes the English school has produced.
