CELEBRATES HIS RELEASE

A man of about 45 years of age appeared before Dr. Cardan and Mr. D. Colliding. justices of the peace, at the Police Court yesterday on a charge of being drunk. Sub-Inspector Hendry explained that Donovan had only been released from the Salvation Army Inebriates' Home at Pakatoa the previous day. after 12 months' sojourn there, and had celebrated the occasion by getting drunk. On his release he was given a certain sum of money by the State, but of this he only had £1 as 3d left. Donovan had been committed to the island from Wellington. Who.i the Bench suggested issuing a prohibition order against him tor 12 months the accused protested that it was not necessary, as he had decided to "give up the drink." He was going away into the country, and he promised that he would not drink any more. 'The Bench in consequence decided not to issue the prohibition order, and convicting the accused fined him 10s, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. OTHER CASES. Harry Swallow admitted the offence of having ridden a bicycle on the footpath in Croat North Road, contrary to the borough by-laws. "This riding of bicycles on footpaths," said Sub-Inspector Hendry, " is a. dangerous practice, which is unfortunately becoming very prevalent." Swallow was fined 10s and costs. Alfred Brett, for failing to light at nigln. an excavation which he had made in Arden-str<*et, Newmarket, was convicted and ordered to pay costs, it being explained that he had put lights there, but they had been put out by boys. Win. Bowden was charged with having used threatening behaviour towards MaryEllen Ludlow, who feared a repetition and askeo that he be bound over to keep the peace. Mr. Singer appeared for the complainant and Mr. Hackett for the defendant. The complainant said that Bowden had injured her dog. causing its death, and had promised to pay for it. He did not, however, pay the amount required, and calling at her house used threatening behaviour towards her. The defendant declared that the "threatening behaviour" was very much exaggerated. The Bench dismissed the case.
