SALMON FOR NEW ZEALAND.
OVA FROM IRELAND. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] London, January 1. Skw Zealand's chief inspector of fisheries (Mr. L. F. Ayson), who arrived by the Athenic in the middle of December, went. straight- to work in the collection of the million salmon ova (salmo salar), which it was desired to send off to New Zealand by the Turakina. At the end of last week ho went across to Ireland, and succeeded in securing from the Duke of Devonshire's water at Lismore Castle, County Water- j ford, half the quantity required. These he brought over to England, and, with a con- I signment from the Tay, safely stowed on the ! Turakina in London just in time to escape! the terribly cold weather of the Christmas week. Mr. Ayson proceeded with the Turakma as far as Plymouth to give instructions as to the care of the ova, and then returned to town. The supply of fish in the rivers has made it difficult to get anything like the quantity of ova required.
