She had 80,000 < es of oil aboard, and it was feared that a terrific explosion, endangering the other shipping of the port, would follow. The vessel was therefore hurriedly moved out of the fairway, and within range of the forts. The crew left her in tho boats, and the big guns of the fort then opened fire on the burning steamer, sinking her before the fire had extended to the oil.
