THE NEW POST OFFICE.
The need for the new Auckland Post Office ia so great that it is to be hoped the Government will push on with the work at the earliest possible moment, and not allow the necessary alterations of plans to unduly delay its commencement. The accommodation afforded by the existing Post Office for receiving, sorting, and forwarding mails is hardly equal to the most ordinary requirements, and inevitably proves completely insufficient whenever any strain is placed. upon it. Yesterday, the Suez, Australian, American, and Southern mails were poured into the local post office practically together, and with the best of will and energy the officials could not possibly deal with them to their own satisfaction, or in a manner creditable to the Department, this for sheer lack of room. This is an old complaint, and one which should be heard no more after the completion of the new building. We only draw attention to it again in order that the Government may not lose sight of the urgency for the new post office building. Many Government buildings have been erected, in various times pad in sundry places, with a mainly ornamental purpose. But the new Auckland Post Office is called for upon strictly utilitarian lines, the present building being absolutely inadequate in every way, both for the general public and for the work of the staff.
