CAPTAIN COOK.

[FROM CUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] London, November 13. THk discussion of Sir J. H. Carruthers' complaint that England has been forgetful of the services of her great navigator, James Cook, , has elicited some interesting fragments of history. Mr. Stanley B. Atkinson, M.A., M.8., chairman of the General Purposes Committee of the Stepney Borough Council, writes to The Times:—"l may, as a Stepney man, state that, two memorials actually exist within the Hamlet. of Mile End Old Town, viz.: (1) A terracotta mcd.illion fixed by the London County Council last year to the front wall of 88, Mile EtuiRoad, where Captain Cook resided for several years; and (2) Captain Cook's charity for ancient seamen and their widows, the funds whereof arise from a small esato facing the northern end of, Burdett Road. Formerly, Captain Cook's ulmhouses stood on this spot. The trustees of this charity are now appointed by the Stepney Borough Council. In your note you state that Captain Cook was married in 1762. ' Mrs. Cook survived her husband 56 years, and died in 1875, at the age of 93.' This would surely make her age at least 133 years at her demise! I believe that .she died in 1833." Mr. Arthur. Palliser writes:—"The Hon. J. H. Carruthers may not be aware of the fact that Sir Hugh Palliser, under whose auspices Lieutenant Cook was appointed commander of the Endeavour in 1768, caused to be erected, in the grounds of his residence, the Vachc, Bucks, a monument to the gallant explorer, which still exists."
